Who We Are?

Women Empowerment Organization is a non-governmental, voluntary and independent organization, established in June 2004. The organization is most active in and around Erbil, Iraq, the capital of the Kurdistan Region with offices in Ankawa. WEO increases the social, political, economic and cultural participation of women in all aspects of society. WEO holds trainings, seminars, conferences and workshops that foster exchanges of information among women, coordinating with national, regional and international human rights movements.

Women's rights, human rights, gender equity, economic engagement and political participation are promoted, as well as elimination of all forms of discrimination against women. Moreover, WEO advocates for protection of women's rights in the legal system, in an effort to meet global standards in international conventions and treaties.

WEO also encourages the participation of youth and women in the development and rebuilding process of Iraq, providing training and supporting them to locate employment and business opportunities. WEO has been identified as a regional Small Business Development Center by the USAID funded Tijara project.
